Nigerian Government Extends Deadline For NIN-SIM Linkage

This was announced on Friday in a statement jointly signed by the Director of Public Affairs of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Dr Ikechukwu Adinde, and the Head of Corporate Communications at the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), Mr Kayode Adegoke. An approval to extend the period of the NIN-SIM linkage to May 6 was given at the meeting of the Ministerial Task Force on NIN-SIM data linkage held on Thursday in Abuja, the nation’s capital.

By Oghenevwede Ohwovoriole The federal government has granted Mobile Network Operators (MNOs ) approval to establish dedicated SIM Swap Centres across the 774 local governments in the country. It also approved the extension of the tenure of National Identity Number (NIN) enrolment agents’ licences for MNOs from one to five years, having considered their performances so far satisfactory. It, however, stated that their operations would be subjected to continuous monitoring. A joint statement by the Director of Public Affairs of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) and the Head of Corporate Communications of the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), Dr. Ikechukwu Adinde and Mr Kayode Adegoke respectively, conveyed government’s decisions.

This is just as the government reaffirmed its position on suspension of new SIM card registration across the country. This was part of the decisions reached at a stakeholders meeting convened by the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Dr Isa Pantami. This is contained in a statement signed and issued by the Director, Public Affairs of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Dr Ikechukwu Adinde.
