Parliament outlines itinerary for dissolution, presidential inauguration

+ Ghana’s Parliament has announced its programmes leading to the dissolution of its seventh session to pave way for the inauguration of the eighth session on Thursday, January 7, 2021. The line up of activities also covers the inauguration and swearing-in of President-elect, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on the same day. A statement released by the Public Affairs Directorate of the house indicated that attendance to any of the programmes will strictly be by invitation due to COVID-19. The statement signed by Parliament’s Director of Public Affairs, Madam Kate Addo disclosed that President Akufo-Addo will be delivering the final State of the Nation Address on Tuesday, January 5, at 10 am to the House.

Daily Trust reports that the state government’s directive came a few hours after the Management of Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) hinted that it could not go on with its scheduled reopening date of Monday, 25th January 2021 as it was still awaiting the state government’s directive. The Director, Public Affairs Directorate of ABU, Auwalu Umar had earlier stated that the state government had sent a verification team to the institution on January 20th, 2021 to assess the school’s compliance with COVID-19 preventive protocol. However, the latest statement by the Ministry of Education on Sunday evening stated that: “All the measures which have been assessed and confirmed to be in place must be sustained as any lapse or bridge will lead to the closure of the erring Institution without notice.”

Daily Post Nigeria Published The National Examinations Council (NECO) has released the internal Senior Secondary School Examination (SSCE) results. This year, there has been a two per cent increase in candidates who made five credits and above in all subjects. NECO also derecognised 12 schools for their involvement in mass cheating and cases of malpractice. The Registrar, Professor Godswill Obioma, confirmed this at the NECO Headquarters in Minna. Obioma said the schools derecognised include four schools in Adamawa, two in Kaduna, two in Kastina, Two in Niger, one in Taraba and one in FCT. He said that 24 supervisors were blacklisted for various offences ranging from poor supervision, aiding and abetting, connivance with non candidates to write answers on chalkboards.

The move is in pursuant with Article 67 of the 1992 constitution which states that “the President shall, at the beginning of each session of Parliament and before a dissolution of Parliament, deliver to Parliament a message on the state of the nation.” The Public Affairs Directorate of Parliament in a statement said the event is scheduled for 10:00 am. It will, however, be strictly by invitation due to COVID-19. Expectations are that the President will be heavy on his second term, the ravaging impact of the COVID-19 and other sectors of the economy and social development. Meanwhile, the House has announced its programmes leading to the dissolution of its seventh session to pave way for the inauguration of the eighth session on Thursday, January 7, 2021.
