Now, there are syringes lakhs and lakhs of them for India’s Covid vaccination drive, which is the world’s largest. Since it took hold last year, the Covid pandemic has resulted in the generation of tonnes of biomedical waste.

These are workers at the Common Bio-Medical Waste Treatment Facilities. There are two biomedical garbage processing plants in the district, one for the city located at Sangawadi and another for Pimpri-Chinchwad at Yashwantrao Chavan Municipal Hospital, which have the responsibility of collecting biomedical waste from 5,500 healthcare facilities and then incinerating or recycling it.
