Seneca Towers seniors get vaccine in pop-up clinic

(WHEC) About 275 senior residents of Seneca Towers received the first dose of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine Saturday.  Seneca Towers is a low-income senior living community located on the Genesee River in downtown Rochester.  Saturday s pop-up clinic was reserved for Seneca Tower residents only and was part of Governor Cuomo s effort to make the vaccine accessible to underserved communities and communities of color.  Resident Mary C. Gaston described the opportunity as a dream come true and said she was elated to hear she could get the vaccine.  The pop-up was a collaborative effort between Rochester Management (which oversees Seneca Towers and several other low-income housing sites), Rochester Rapid Response Team, Common Ground Health, Finger Lakes COVID-19 Vaccine Hub and Task Force, the City of Rochester, Monroe County, New York State, and Trillium Health which brought the vaccine to Seneca Towers on its m

Governor Andrew Cuomo announced Monday that New York State has administered 38,000 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine, which his office says is the highest total in the nation. The state expects to see 466,000 doses of the vaccine arrive in the next week, including 346,200 doses of the Moderna vaccine and 120,000 doses of the Pfizer vaccine. This comes on the same day the country has begun its vaccine program for nursing homes and long term care facilities, including 618 in New York. The program is expected to take six weeks.

Monroe County launches COVID-19 Vaccination Task Force

Monroe County officials have formed a COVID-19 Vaccination Task Force to oversee the coordination and distribution of the novel coronavirus vaccine within the community, County Executive Adam Bello said during a Wednesday press briefing. Bello stressed that the task force would work to ensure equitable and transparent distribution of the vaccine in Monroe County. The task force announcement comes one day after the first doses of the vaccine to be given in Monroe County were administered to a small group of health workers at Strong Memorial Hospital.

Salon, barbershop owners step in to help people in need of housing assistance

Credit April Franklin  Although Majestic Hair Design is open for business, owner Debbie Wise hasn’t spent much of the week doing hair at the Irondequoit salon. Instead, she has been screening calls on behalf of Catholic Family Services, helping people who are applying for rental assistance through the Eviction Prevention Pilot Initiative.  Wise is among 25 salon owners who also serve as community health educators for Common Ground Health. The program trains stylists and barbers to educate their clients on health care and to connect them to providers.  She said it was a good fit because as a hairstylist, she is used to people opening up about their problems.
