Pickerington man gets 13 years in prison for Pataskala area home invasion
NEWARK - A Pickerington man was sentenced to 13 years in prison for his role in a Pataskala area home invasion that turned into a police chase earlier this year.
Joseph T. Powell Jr., 32, of Pickerington, pleaded guilty to one count each aggravated burglary, a first-degree felony; kidnapping, a first-degree felony; failure to comply with order or signal of police officer, a third-degree felony; and tampering with evidence, a third-degree felony, in Licking County Common Pleas Court on Tuesday.
According to Assistant Licking County Prosecutor Cliff Murphy, the Licking County Sheriff s Office was called to a home on Ford Avenue around 9:49 p.m. Feb. 23 for a reported home invasion. While the agency was en route, Murphy said dispatch advised the suspects had robbed the victims with firearms and bullet proof vests before fleeing in a white van.

LISBON An East Liverpool man who took a broken broom handle after another inmate at the county jail was sentenced to 11 months in prison during a sentencing hearing in Common Pleas Court on Monday.
William L. Gist, 53, Beaver Street, East Liverpool, had previously pleaded guilty to possession of a deadly weapon while under detention, assault and two counts of violating a protection order. He and his defense attorney, James Lanzo, explained that the weapon charge at the jail was not unprovoked.
Lanzo said video surveillance leading up to the incident shows an inmate had taken the food from another inmate. Words were exchanged and Gist took the matter into his own hands.
Indictments: Marion man indicted on two separate charges of possession of fentanyl
The Marion grand jury indicted a Marion man who was arrested on charges of possession of fentanyl and tampering with evidence during the Wednesday session in the Common Pleas Court.
Jason Allen Smith, 45, of Marion was arrested on Oct. 11, 2020 and charged with one count of possession of fentanyl, a second-degree felony; and one count of tampering with evidence, a third-degree felony. In the indictment, prosecution alleged the amount of fentanyl Smith was in possession of was equal to or more than 10 grams.
Additionally, Smith was indicted on Wednesday for a second count of possession of fentanyl, this time a fourth-degree felony, after being arrested on Dec. 17, 2020. In the second indictment, prosecution alleged the amount of fentanyl Smith was in possession of was equal to or more than one gram.

WARREN A Trumbull County inmate who has given corrections officers nothing but problems since his incarceration last summer was given a 30-month prison term on consecutive sentences from two cases in Common Pleas Court on Thursday.
Austin G. Lunsford, 27, of Risher Road SW, read a letter of apology for the court, but Judge Ronald J. Rice only had questions for the defendant before pronouncing sentence.
Lunsford first was sentenced to 18 months on a failure to comply charge connected to a September 2020 ATV chase on Summit Street with Warren police. Then, Lunsford was given a 12-month sentence for an assault conviction linked to the defendant biting a jail doctor in the arm as he tried to give him medical aid at the lockup on Dec. 3, 2020. During that incident, Lunsford allegedly had stuck his private part in a hole in the wall of his cell, according to reports.
