A team of researchers from Germany and China has developed a novel artificial color-changing material that imitates the skin of a chameleon, through luminogens (molecules that cause crystals to glow) arranged into different core and shell layers of hydrogels rather than a single uniform matrix.

The material may also be used to advance the development of stretchable electronics, dynamic camouflaging robots, and anticounterfeiting technologies.

May 6 (UPI) Scientists have created a new type of synthetic skin that uses luminogens and a bilayer structure to artfully alter its color in response to the environment.
