Traffic congestion costs $690M, UHERO suggests ways to fix it | University of Hawaiʻi System News

One of most noticeable effects of the COVID-19 pandemic has been the dramatic reduction in traffic on Hawaiʻi’s roadways. But can this trend continue after the pandemic? Researchers from the University of Hawaiʻi Economic Research Organization ( UHERO) say it can be accomplished through a variety of ways, including implementing a strategic toll fee and staggering work hours. A recent report estimated the annual cost of traffic congestion in Hawaiʻi to be $690 million, mainly paid through lost time and productivity from workers sitting in gridlock. UHERO says smarter policy could eliminate this cost and direct the savings to local workers.

COVID-19 spike may reflect increased mobility, nearing pre-pandemic levels | University of Hawaiʻi System News

UHERO). Despite progress in vaccinations, Hawaiʻi has undergone a rise in new infections with recent cases concentrated among younger, unvaccinated individuals. On April 3, the seven-day average for new COVID-19 cases hit a peak of 117 new daily cases and has since declined slightly. A new mobility report by UHERO shows 27% of residents are staying completely at home on a given day in early April 2021, only 7% more than pre-pandemic levels. During infection peaks in March and August 2020, 40% remained at home. The mobility data allows for a comparison across islands and neighborhoods. Maui has undergone a steep decline in the share of residents staying at home, which correlates with the timing of rising infections.

UHERO Forecast Sort Of More Optimistic, But Is Based On Several Factors

NikolayFrolochkin from Pixabay The state s economy will be determined by two things this year: more federal relief and the vaccine rollout. That s according to the latest report from the University of Hawaii s Economic Research Organization, or UHERO, forecasting the year ahead. Local economists say there is still a lot of uncertainty facing the state s economy, but they are expecting a rapid recovery in 2021. The report expects between 20,000 and 25,000 jobs will return this year with the possibility of an additional five or six thousand jobs if vaccinations speed up in the state s major domestic and foreign tourism markets. Carl Bonham, executive director of UHERO, says their baseline forecast is more optimistic than previous outlooks. But he says it is based on a set of assumptions, such as the vaccine rollout and federal relief.
