Import of 600,000 metric tons of sugar allowed July 29, 2021 ISLAMABAD: The Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) of the cabinet on Wednesday decided to merge a summary tabled by the Ministry of Industries and Production for allowing import of 100,000 metric tons of sugar after knowing that the federal cabinet had approved the import of 600,000 metric tons of sugar in order to build up strategic reserves. Top officials told The News in the background discussions after the ECC meeting that the forum had earlier approved import of 200,000 metric tons of sugar but when this issue came under discussion in the federal cabinet this week, it was decided to add 300,000 to 400,000 metric tons more to it so that a total of 600,000 metric tons of sugar would be imported in totality in order to build up strategic reserves in the domestic market.

The ascending price of DAP, which is one of the important nutrients after widely used urea fertiliser, will further imbalance its use due to growing disparity with other chemical fertilisers. With low application, the DAP is already being used disproportionately by local farmers due to its high cost.

The rates of 20 kg and 10 kg bags of wheat flour have been increased by Rs150 and Rs75, respectively. After the surge, the new price of a 20 kg bag of flour is Rs950 against the earlier rate of Rs800. A 10 kg bag of flour would now cost Rs475 per kg against the old price of Rs400. The price of sugar has been jacked up by Rs17 per kg.  The new price of sugar is Rs85 per kg against the earlier rate of Rs68 per kg.
