Governor DeSantis Provides Update on State Response Efforts for Surfside Building Collapse
Today, Governor Ron DeSantis announced that, after discussion with local officials in Surfside and structural engineers, the remainder of Champlain Building South will be demolished this weekend prior to potential impacts from Tropical Storm Elsa to ensure the safety of residents and first responders. Demolition activities will be scheduled within 36 hours. First responders will resume search and rescue efforts as quickly as possible after the demolition. The state will also cover all costs associated with the demolition of the building.
This morning, Governor Ron DeSantis was joined by Lieutenant Governor Jeanette Nuñez, Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava, Florida Division of Emergency Management (FDEM) Director Kevin Guthrie and Surfside Mayor Charles Burkett for a press briefing to provide updates on the Surfside Building Collapse response.
Isabel Guzman announces the closure of the Restaurant Revitalization Fund (RRF) program, signed into law by President Joe Biden as part of the American Rescue Plan. The program provided much needed economic aid to restaurants and other establishments struggling to make ends meet as a result of the pandemic.
“The $28.6 billion Restaurant Revitalization Fund provided desperately needed relief to more than 100,000 restaurants and other food and beverage businesses across the nation with significant funding going to our hardest-hit, underserved businesses,”
said SBA Administrator Isabel Guzman. “Restaurants are at the center of our neighborhoods and propel economic activity on Main Streets. As among the first to close in this pandemic and likely the last to reopen, many are still struggling to survive. The SBA will continue to work hard to ensure they get the resources they need to recover, rebuild and be resilient.

Governor DeSantis Meets with President Biden in Florida and Visits Surfside Building Collapse Families and First Responders
Today, Governor Ron DeSantis, First Lady Casey DeSantis, Lieutenant Governor Jeanette Nunez and Florida Division of Emergency Management (FDEM) Director Kevin Guthrie met with President Joe Biden, First Lady Jill Biden and other federal officials to provide updates on the ongoing search and rescue efforts in Surfside, as well as meet with survivors, families and first responders to provide support and condolences.
