Former bureaucrat gets bail in dollar smuggling case
After being incarcerated for ninety-eight days, M. Sivasankar, the former Principal Secretary to the Kerala Chief Minister, walked out to freedom from the District Jail, Kakkanad, on Thursday afternoon.
C. Deepu, the judge of the Economic Offences Court, Ernakulam, while granting bail to Mr. Sivasankar bail in the US dollar smuggling case, noted that he had “sufficient knowledge with regard to the smuggling of foreign currencies perpetrated with the help of prime accused” in the case.

Kochi (Kerala) [India], February 3 (ANI): The Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate (Economic Offences) Court on Wednesday granted bail to former principal secretary to the Kerala Chief Minister’s office, M Sivasankar in the US Dollar smuggling case.
Sivasankar, who in Judicial custody for over three months had been granted bail by the Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate s Court on Monday in the Kerala Gold Smuggling Case being probed by Customs Department, however, remained in prison because the case registered against him regarding the Enforcement Directorate s (ED) dollar smuggling.
The Economic Offences Court, while granting bail to the former principal secretary to the Kerala CMO observed that a major part of the investigation in relation to Sivasankar s alleged limited role is complete.

In foreign currency smuggling case
The bail application of M. Sivasankar, the former Principal Secretary to Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, in the foreign currency smuggling case will be considered on February 1.
Moving the bail application before the Economic Offences Court, Ernakulam, S. Rajeev, the counsel for the accused, submitted that the Customs arrested the petitioner with the intention to prolong his detention. Though the investigation agency had questioned the co-accused and the witnesses in the case on several occasions, they could not collect any material to implicate the petitioner in the crime. Even by the report of the investigation agency, they had questioned the witnesses and the co-accused in the case as early as October 10, last year, he submitted.

In money laundering and diplomatic channel gold smuggling cases
After being incarcerated for over two months in the money laundering and diplomatic channel gold smuggling cases, M. Sivasankar, the former Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister, secured bail from the Kerala High Court and the Economic Offences Court, Ernakulam, in both the cases on Monday.
The High Court granted bail to Mr. Sivasankar in a money laundering case registered by the Enforcement Directorate.
Justice Ashok Menon, while granting Mr. Sivasankar bail, observed that there was no doubt about the complicity of the petitioner in the case and there were no reasonable grounds to believe that he was not guilty.
