The coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic has magnified structural gaps in the region’s countries while also increasing their financing needs to confront the emergency, and it has prompted a rise in debt levels that jeopardizes the recovery and countries’ capacity to achieve a sustainable rebuilding with equality, the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) indicated today.

United Nations, Mar 12 (Prensa Latina) The Covid-19 pandemic has scaled up the structural gaps and expanded the financial needs of Latin American and Caribbean countries to face up such an emergency, ECLAC said today. During a virtual briefing, Alicia Bárcena, executive secretary of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), said that the present health crisis also ramped up debt levels in the region. All this jeopardizes the recovery and capacity of these nations for a sustainable reconstruction, she said.
