Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, April 21) The Senate Committee of the Whole will reconvene next week in response to President Rodrigo Duterte’s appeal for lawmakers to give his order on lowering pork tariffs a chance, senators said Wednesday.
Senate Minority Leader Franklin Drilon told CNN Philippines another hearing will be held on Tuesday, April 27, to address the appeal of Malacañang to give EO 128 a chance, as agreed upon by senators in a meeting.
“The decision to reconvene the Committee of the Whole was recognized as a call of the Senate President. No senator objected,” Drilon said in a text message. Senate President Vicente Tito Sotto III also confirmed the meeting.

The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) batted Wednesday, April 21, for the passage of the proposed Science for Change Act to ensure that more funding will be committed for country’s research and development initiatives.
DOST Undersecretary for Research and Development Rowena Cristina L. Guevara made the call during the virtual celebration of the first-ever National Innovation Day, jointly conducted by the DOST, National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA), Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), and World Bank.
“There is a need for our industries to engage R&D and to engage partners in the academe and research and development institutes. It behooves the government to actually put money on this activity as R&D is a risky activity and you’re going to need the government to hold the private sector to get there,” she said.

The Duterte administration’s chief economic manager has called on lawmakers to support temporary increased in pork imports at lower tariff rates to address the scarcity in the domestic supply of hog meat.
Finance Secretary Carlos G. Dominguez III said the lower import tariffs and higher the Minimum Access Volume (MAV) on pork will ensure that meat remains affordable to Filipino families already reeling from the economic impact of the pandemic.
Dominguez, chairman of President Duterte’s Economic Development Cluster (EDC), said their policy on pork importation went extensive deliberations and consultations among concerned agencies and the public.
