UK envoy touts climate cooperation

The UK pledges to work with Taiwan to fight climate change, as both share democratic values respect for human rights, British Representative to Taiwan John Dennis said yesterday.
Dennis made the remarks at a news briefing at the Britishake restaurant in Taipei, marking Earth Day.
Dennis arrived in Taipei in December last year and assumed his post on Jan. 11. From 2014 to 2018, he was British ambassador to Angola and Sao Tome and Principe, and previously worked for the British embassy in Beijing.

Ministry raises restrictions to conserve water

The Ministry of Economic Affairs is to tighten water restrictions to prevent Taiwan from running out of water before the rainy season starts next month, the ministry said yesterday.
Hsinchu County remains on “orange alert,” although industrial users that consume more than 1,000m2 of water per day have been asked to reduce consumption by 13 percent, up from the previously required 11 percent, it said, adding that Kaohsiung and Tainan industrial users would have to reduce consumption by 11 percent, up from 7 percent.
Non-industrial large water users would have to reduce water consumption by 20 percent, up from 10 percent, it added.
Alchip shares plunge by daily limit for fourth day

Alchip Technologies Ltd (世芯), which designs application-specific ICs for other companies, yesterday saw its shares fall by the maximum daily limit of 10 percent for the fourth consecutive session after a key customer was blacklisted by the US Department of Commerce’s Bureau of Industry and Security on Thursday last week.
Alchip on Tuesday said that it had stopped shipments to Chinese semiconductor company Phytium Information Technology Co (飛騰信息技術), which was placed on the US entity list along with six other Chinese companies.
