New Delhi: About two weeks after the Sri Lankan cabinet approved the project, Adani Ports announced that it will develop and operate the Colombo portâs West Container Terminal (WCT) for a period of 35 years.
Adani Ports was earlier supposed to have been developing the East Container Terminal as part of a 2020 trilateral pact between India, Japan and Sri Lanka. However, the Sri Lankan government withdrew from that pact and decided to develop the East Container Terminal through its state firm, under pressure from trade unions and opposition parties.

Colombo, March 7 (newsin.asia): The Sri Lanka Port Workers’ Union General Secretary Niroshan Gorakahenna told the media on Saturday that the workers are opposed to handing over the port to the Adanis and asserted that the Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) itself should undertake to build the WCT.
It can do the ECT, it should be able to do the WCT too,” he said and added: Sri Lankan nationalists cannot oppose foreign involvement in the East Container Terminal and allow it in West Teminal. Workers will oppose it. We plan to talk about this to the Chairman of the SLPA on Monday,” Gorakahenna is quoted in Virakesari as saying.

Lanka Looks for Indian and Muslim Support to Get Over UNHRC Hump 3 crucial decisions
COLOMBO: Sri Lanka has urgently taken three major decisions with an eye on getting the support of India and the Muslim states in the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) in Geneva where a vote is to be taken later this month on a resolution castigating it for human riots violations and alleged war crimes.
For starters, Sri Lanka established a Secretariat for a Trilateral Maritime Security System which had been proposed by a conference of National Security Advisors at the instance of the Indian National Security Advisor Ajit Doval in November 2020. The Lankan government had been dragging its feet on this issue, as it has good relations with China, the emerging power in the Indian Ocean with growing economic stakes in Sri Lanka.
