February 17, 2021 The Coastal Carolina University Gupta College of Science, in collaboration with the Engineering Science program, is hosting its inaugural Engineering Week (EWeek) on Feb. 22-26, 2021. The week’s events will give CCU students and select area high school students the opportunity to learn more about career opportunities from engineering professionals. EWeek was founded in 1951 by the National Society of Professional Engineers in conjunction with President George Washington’s birthday, Feb. 22. Washington is considered the nation’s first engineer, notably for his survey work. EWeek is dedicated to ensuring a diverse and well-educated future engineering workforce by increasing understanding of and interest in engineering and technology careers.

Medical Device Makers See Progress in EO Sterilization

Photo credit: okrasiuk – adobe.stock.com Medical device manufacturers and contract sterilizers are working with regulators to reduce ethylene oxide (EO) emissions and develop alternative sterilization methods, while assuring product availability. Public and governmental alarm about the use of ethylene oxide (EO) for sterilization of medical devices is driving device manufacturers, contract sterilizers, and other stakeholders to double down on developing sterilization processes that reduce or eliminate the use of EO. “Ethylene Oxide Sterilization: An FDA & EPA Update,” presented during 2020 Virtual Engineering Week by Mac McKeen, fellow, regulatory science, at Boston Scientific, presents the regulatory lay of the land, as well as strategies for reducing reliance on EO. All-in-One Robot Simplifies Packaging Tasks

YouTube A simple, low-cost 6-axis unit packs full-scale tooling, control, and networking capabilities for pick-and-place, parts handling, and palletizing applications. Epson’s Aaron Donlon says the “most exciting thing about robotics is ease of use and costs,” which are coming down, as in the case of the compact all-in-one VT6L model, which offers big features at low cost (starting at US$13,900). With its 990-millimeter reach and 6-kilogram payload capacity, Donlon says it’s suitable for pick-and-place, machine tending, dispensing, packaging, pallet loading, and assembly applications. The compact robot can be mounted on a table, wall, or ceiling. Compactness continues with a wrist pitch that can access hard-to-reach areas and confined spaces in packaging and converting. Built-in controls, software, and networking (including Fieldbus) provide full-scale automation features. Options include Cleanroom ISO4 and IP67 specifications, end-of-arm tooling
