Marshall Health adds pulmonary-critical care medicine providers

Marshall Health, Cabell Huntington Hospital and St. Mary’s Medical Center expand their pulmonary-critical care team of providers with the addition of Tarake Aljarod, M.D., and Jodi H. Biller, MSN, APRN, FNP-BC.
Aljarod, a board-certified, fellowship-trained pulmonary, critical care and sleep medicine specialist, has been named an assistant professor of medicine at the Marshall University Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine. Aljarod specializes in interstitial lung diseases and pulmonary procedures. He is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine with subspecialty certification in pulmonary disease.
Aljarod earned his medical degree at the University of Benghazi Faculty of Medicine in Benghazi, Libya, followed by an internal medicine residency at Morehouse School of Medicine in Atlanta, Georgia. Aljarod then went on to complete a pulmonary and critical care medicine fellow

This has certainly been a year unlike any other for BioHealth Capital Region (BHCR) life science companies of all sizes and kinds. Just a few months into 2020, the coronavirus pandemic swept the region, seriously disrupting, albeit temporarily, the best-laid plans of aspiring founders, entrepreneurs, emerging startups, pre-clinical and more established, larger biohealth organizations in Virginia, Washington, D.C., and Maryland.
The regional life science ecosystem was prepared and pivoted rapidly to not only ensure continued operations, but also to redirect resources, talent and technologies to creating testing, developing COVID-19 therapies and progressing SARS-CoV-2 vaccine candidates.

Coastal Medical employees recently raised funds to donate over 49,500 pounds of food through the Rhode Island Community Food Bank in an effort to end hunger in Rhode Island. Contributions from Coastal employees were matched dollar-for-dollar by the organization, which resulted in a donation of over $16,500. This was accomplished through Coastal s Charity and Community Service Initiative, which formed in January 2019. Access to healthy food options is more important than ever this year, said Shannon Boyd, the Charity Initiative Leader and Medicaid Accountable Entity Program Manager at Coastal Medical. During these difficult times, the support of Coastal employees went above and beyond to truly make a difference in our community. We greatly appreciate their incredible generosity.
At its last Council meeting of the year, the Pierce County Council made a commitment to increase behavioral health services in the county by approving a 1/10
th of 1 percent sales tax increase, and set in motion creation of a pilot program aimed at reinvesting more Medicaid dollars into Pierce County.
In a 5-1 vote, Council passed the sales tax increase to fund behavioral health and therapeutic court services. At the same time members authorized creation of an Accountable Care Organization pilot program, and establishment of a Behavioral Health Advisory Board to create a behavioral health implementation plan.
