Government ministers have been asked to intervene to secure the uncertain future of Kāpiti Airport, with local mayors raising concerns that a closure could hamper the response to emergencies. Worried about speculation that the airport s owners planned to close it, Porirua Mayor Anita Baker, Kāpiti Mayor K Gurunathan and representatives from the Save Kāpiti Airport group and Kāpiti Aero Club met with Transport Minister Michael Wood on Tuesday morning to request his support for keeping the airport open.

Philippa Cameron will continue driving a 64km round trip to Kurow twice a day until she can be assured her young daughters will be safely belted in on their school bus ride.
The Otematata mother, who has more than 16,900 followers on her Instagram page What’s for Smoko, has launched a petition to get seatbelts on school buses and has managed to collect about 3000 signatures so far.
The issue made its way on to Mrs Cameron’s radar about a year ago, when her eldest daughter Flora was about to turn 5.

The infringement fee for using a mobile phone while driving will increase from $80 to $150 from 30 April 2021 to encourage safer driving, Transport Minister Michael Wood announced today.
Michael Wood said too many people are still picking up the phone while driving.
“Police issued over 40,000 infringement notices for this offence last year. Driver distraction is a serious road safety issue, and inattention – including from mobile phones – can have tragic consequences.
“Between 2015 and 2019, there were 22 road deaths in New Zealand and 73 serious injuries where drivers were distracted by a mobile phone. This is likely to be under-reported as it can be difficult for Police to detect phone use when they attend crashes.
