Delivering on time, within the law: No compromises on safety at Mainfreight

Mainfreight managing director Don Braid said the company was very strict about what the rules were, and worked closely with Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency on the management of logbooks and the hours driven. “The law is the law, and we’re working hard every day to make sure we are within the boundaries of what the law requires, as well as meeting the demands of our customers - and that’s not easy by the way, but it’s something that you’ve got to make sure you’re on top of.” The company worked hard with individual branch managers ensuring that delivery runs, particularly the long ones, were managed so drivers could complete it within the legal timeframe. National defends Transmission Gully after serious planning flaws found

Transport Minister Michael Wood. Photo: RNZ / Richard Tindiller An interim review into the 27km highway has found serious flaws at the planning stage of the public-private partnership project (PPP), along with a lack of transparency. Transmission Gully was the first motorway in New Zealand set up under a PPP model by the National government in 2012. The road was supposed to be completed in April 2020 but was delayed by more than a year because of significant re-estimation of earthwork requirements, storm events, the Kaikōura earthquake and Covid-19. However, a report commissioned last year after the Transport Agency had to pay more than $200 million to get it back on track, found the project was flawed from the start.
