Utahns drove less in 2020 yet more died in accidents â though not on highways
State officials are asking Utah motorists drivers to pick one of five areas where they can improve their driving.

Utahns drove fewer miles and died in greater numbers on state roads in 2020 â but most of that unexpected divergence was not the result of people driving at extreme speeds on the stateâs highways.
The number of cars on the roads decreased 13% from 2019 to 2020, according to preliminary figures from the Utah Department of Transportation, while the number of fatalities rose 13% to 276. But the number of highway fatalities fell.

The Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT) just released its annual report on traffic crashes for 2020, an unusual and tragic year for traffic deaths despite a reduction in driving due to the pandemic. In the report, the agency acknowledges that 2020 was a tragic year of loss and continues to stay committed to eliminating traffic fatalities. Jonathan Maus for Bike Portland reports that PBOT tallied 54 traffic deaths, although the Portland Police Bureau recorded 58 total fatalities on Portland s roads and parking lots.

CINCINNATI â Reasonable people donât question if itâs a good idea to get behind the wheel if youâve had a few drinks as data around drunk driving have been around for a while. But researchers at the University of Cincinnati have discovered that the number of drugged drivers is increasing.
âWe are seeing rates of drunken driving decrease, but weâre seeing drugged driving increase,â said Rebecca Vidourek, one of the researchers that worked on the study at the University of Cincinnati.
