SASKATOON The City of Saskatoon could be ready to take electric scooters for a spin by next spring according to a new report. In preparing the report, city administration looked to other Canadian jurisdictions where the scooters have been used, particularly Calgary and Ottawa. The city also consulted with SGI. The provincial regulator said the micro-mobility vehicles are non-compliant and cannot travel on roadways. The Traffic Safety Act does not apply to sidewalks and areas used for parking, the report said. A tweak to a city bylaw would be needed to allow e-scooters on city sidewalks, according to the report.

Imagine working to save someone’s life after a crash on the highway while vehicles speed past you at 100 kilometres per hour, just inches away.
An experiment by the Balgonie Volunteer Fire Department suggests that happens more often than you might expect.
The department took part in a Slow Down and Move Over rally, a project that is popular across Canada to raise awareness on slowing down while passing first responders and other road workers on the highway.
For 30 minutes on Wednesday evening, fire crews set up a scene on the Trans-Canada Highway between highways 10 and 46, using the same signage, lights and pylons they would during an emergency.

When the threat of COVID-19 became apparent, some political commentators began arguing that Americans must accept much greater governmental intervention in their lives if the United States were to respond effectively to the disease. This idea was soon distilled into a pithy slogan: “There are no libertarians in a pandemic.”
In fact, government can respond effectively to the historic COVID-19 crisis while following the principles of limited government. However, federal, state, and local governments in the United States have done a poor job of identifying and implementing good policies for the pandemic that are compatible with those principles. Instead, policymakers have attempted interventions far beyond the powers of a properly limited government with poor results.
