TEANECK, NJ Rep. Josh Gottheimer and other state and county leaders gathered under the Route 4, Hackensack River bridge on a recent cloudy morning. The location allowed Gottheimer and others to highlight the region s infrastructure needs.
According to Gottheimer s Office, the bridge is currently rated as structurally deficient, meaning that key elements of the bridge are considered to be in poor or worse condition. You can see the rebar, rust, and crumbling cement. We literally have teams going around our highways testing for crumbling cement, so it doesn t fall and kill someone, Gottheimer said.
I was in Minneapolis just a few miles from the hwy. 35 bridge when it collapsed in 2007, I have been fascinated with bridges and road projects ever since. Now, that drew worldwide attention to the importance of bridge maintenance - I certainly learned a lot. I learned about the Washington, D.C. based American Road & Transportation Builders Association, or ARTBA, advocates strong investment in transportation infrastructure. Today, they put out a list of how the bridges are in each state.
Unfortunately, Iowa s are dead last. ARTBA s website shows Iowa s bridges remain the most structurally deficient in America. We re also number two in the nation in percentage of structurally deficient bridges. The worst is West Virginia.

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - President Biden s new $2.3 trillion infrastructure plan could help pay for repairs to San Diego s worst bridges.
The plan doesn t mention specifics but says the President hopes to fix the 10,000 worst bridges in the country.
According to the American Road and Transportation Builders Association s annual Bridge Report, there are 45,023 structurally deficient bridges in America in poor condition. That equates to 7.3% of all bridges in the country.
Roling emailed her state legislators.
In Roling s case, the state responded. The temporary bridge has been fixed, and she says the bridge has leapfrogged toward the front of South Dakota DOT s list of replacements.
But that s just the story of one bridge. And she fears South Dakotans in every county could tell a similar bridge story.
The nation s infrastructure has dominated the news since last week when President Joe Biden traveled to Pittsburgh to unveil his $2.3 trillion plan, including $620 billion would be spent on transportation infrastructure.
And, more than most states, South Dakota could use it.
The latest state-by-state inventory of bridges, using federal highway data, from the American Road & Transportation Builders Association, a Washington, D.C.-based trade association, finds South Dakota has the fourth-highest rate of structurally deficient roads in the country, trailing only West Virginia, neighboring Iowa, and Rhode Island.
