By mid-December, five in every 100 Americans Ñ more than 16 million Ñ had been infected by COVID-19. Those numbers testify to a historic tragedy. But they don’t fully capture the multitude of ways, large and small, that the virus has upended and reconfigured everyday life in the U.S. For that, there are a host of other numbers. Some may be less familiar than others, yet all are just as telling in calculating the pandemic’s sweeping impact:

Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said he can t see how the current restrictions and recommendations around Thanksgiving would be relaxed by Christmas. Riverside and San Bernardino Counties weren t far behind L.A. County. They had the third and fourth highest increases in average new daily cases, according to the data, and both counties were also among the top 50 for long distance travel over the holiday week. Even after adjusting for population differences among counties across the country, Los Angeles, Riverside and San Bernardino Counties remained in the top 11% nationwide for new cases the week after Thanksgiving.

The $908 billion proposal would also make small businesses in hard-hit industries such as travel eligible for a second round of Payroll Protection Program (PPP) support and would expand eligibility for the PPP program to include tourism offices.  This proposal is the most recent effort by the 13-member Bipartisan, Bicameral Group of the U.S. Senate and U.S. House to end months of partisan bickering over additional Covid-19 relief as the virus continues its winter surge and comes ahead of the late-December expiration of federal Cares Act unemployment benefits that are assisting more than 13 million Americans.
