Local chess instructor Vincent Masole has attained the FIDE International Organiser/International Arbiter, certified online hybrid tournaments trained arbiters, making him the first in the country and amongst one of the first in the world.
Masole started playing Chess when he was about 12 years old in his home village, Makaleng. Masole said “Back in the day almost everyone in the village played Chess, there were chess sets all over the village. I took it up from there and probably learnt and developed a lot as a Chess player, it is in those years that I parted ways with Football and Athletics. Those were the first talents I discovered as a teenager. Three decades later I have played Chess, Trained Chess, Organised Chess events and the journey continues.”

Arab-African Online Individual Chess Championship 2021
Recently we have reported on the Africa Online Individual Championship https://en.chessbase.com/post/africa-online-individual-chess-championship-2021 Now, a title African-Arab Online Individual Championship might sound slightly confusing. Such a Championship indeed took place from 25th to 27th February, 2021. It was a brain child of the President of the Arab Chess Federation, Mr Saud bin Abdul Aziz Al Mualla who was also Head of the Championship’s Organising Committee. On his initiative, prompted by the current trend of online competitions, the African Chess Confederation and the Arab Chess Federation ‘merged’, for this occasion, so that players from both federations had the opportunity to compete. The goal was achieved by the starling number of participants: more than 1600!

Besa Masaiti of Rock and Roll chess club has scooped a bronze medal in the African Online Individual Chess Championships.
The Botswana Chess Federation (BCF)’s secretary general Mokwadi Tingwane said Masaiti played brilliantly as best performing player under 20 girls category.
BCF) took a leap of faith as it sent a team of twelve players, eight officials and four additional players who were on reserve to participate in the African Online Individual Chess Championships.
The championships were held from the 29th of January to the 7th of February. Countries that took part include Angola, Algeria, Botswana, Egypt, Kenya, Lesotho, Madagascar, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Togo, Tunisia and Zambia.
