Salem reports 798 fresh cases and 18 deaths
With 3,197 fresh cases on Friday, the daily COVID-19 caseload of Coimbatore district crossed the 3,000 mark for the first time, taking the overall tally to 1,09,233.
The Health Department reported 13 deaths, which took the district’s toll to 837. The district has 18,290 active cases as on Friday. A total of 1,171 persons were discharged on the day.
Coimbatore district had 773 vacant beds (65 oxygen beds, 697 non-oxygen beds and 11 ICU beds) in government and private hospitals and 479 vacant beds in COVID-19 Care Centres.
Tiruppur district reported 771 new cases on Friday and the overall tally rose to 34,661.
Seven deaths were reported on Friday, which took the toll to 272. The district has 5,179 active cases as on Friday.
Police intercept car, seize 100 kg ganja in Madhavaram

Narcotics Intelligence Bureau (NIB-CID) has seized 100 kg ganja from two drug peddlers.
Following a tip-off about ganja being smuggled from other States, a special team from NIB-CID mounted surveillance near Madhavaram. The team intercepted a car going from Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh to Vedaranyam in Nagapattinam district and found ganja concealed in gunny bags. The police nabbed Nallamperumal, 40, and Durairaj, 45, from Usilampatti, who were travelling in the car.
In a similar case, Mahalakshmi, 57, and Jaya, 45, of Veechur, were arrested by personnel from Manali Newtown police station for possessing 8.5 kg of ganja.

The Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) on Thursday arrested an inspector and two head constables from the Narcotics Intelligence Bureau CID (NIB-CID) in Coimbatore on charges of demanding a bribe of ₹1 lakh from an accused.
DVAC sources said that a 33-year-old man was arrested here for possession of ganja in the past week.
An NIB-CID inspector Sarojini (40) allegedly told the accused’s wife that the quantity of the ganja possessed by him could be reported as less than 1 kg to ensure that he gets bail. However, the inspector demanded a bribe of ₹1 lakh for this and the accused’s wife paid ₹30,000 to Sarojini and head constable Ramasamy (45) as advance, the sources said.
