Firefighters learn how to save lives in hybrid-car crashes

It used to be only gas-powered cars on the road. Now, firefighters have to rescue people from electric and hybrid cars, too.
Teslas, Audis, Chevrolets, and everything in between are trending in the way of the future. More of us are driving electric or hybrid vehicles and using natural gas to get around.
“The future is here. I want you to drive down the street and tell me how many Teslas you see. Then go and just look at how many hybrid vehicles you see, whether they’re all-electric or fuel and electric. They’re everywhere and it is a little bit more of a hazard for us if we don’t understand how to operate with those,” said John Nichols, a training captain at Bonita Springs Fire Control & Rescue District.

Child injured after being struck by vehicle in Bonita Springs

A 10-year-old was hit by a car and injured Thursday morning while walking to his bus stop in Bonita Springs.
Johnny Domingo Mateo Nicolas was walking along Bonita Drive off Old US-41 Road. Bonita Drive has no sidewalks and construction is going on there right now.
Johnny was struck near Woods Circle, and immediately after the crash, his family heard his screams.
“He didn’t say anything. He was just screaming because he was run over,” said Andrea Estevan Tomas, Johnny’s grandmother.
Fire engine rolls over on way to kitchen fire in Bonita Springs, no injuries

Bonita Springs Fire Control & Rescue District confirmed Wednesday one of its fire engines flipped over on the way to a kitchen fire.
According to the fire district, firefighters were heading to the scene of a kitchen fire at a home in the city when the truck they were in rolled over on Snell Lane.
The fire engine took a sharp turn and rolled over into a wooded area along the roadway. Luckily, there were no reported injuries to anyone in the fire truck.
Lee County firefighters begin to receive COVID-19 vaccine
LEE COUNTY, Fla. – Firefighters across Lee County are beginning to get the coronavirus vaccine.
Working with the Department of Health, fire chiefs and firefighters from Cape Coral Fire, Bayshore Fire and Rescue and Bonita Springs Fire Control and Rescue District, among other departments, have had the opportunity to get the Moderna vaccine if they wish.
“I think it’s very exciting and I just hope more people do it,” said Chief Greg DeWitt with Bonita Springs Fire Control and Rescue District. “2020 was bad enough, we don’t want to have 2021 looking the same way.”
