Evacuations ordered as Lincoln County Three Rivers Fire erupts in size

A fire burning near Ruidoso has grown from 30 acres this morning to 4,000 acres by 4 p.m. Monday.The Three Rivers Fire is burning on the backside of the White Mountains of the Smokey Bear Ranger District between Tularosa and Carrizozo. Forest Service Manager David Bales tells KOAT the fire is spreading up the mountain. Wind gusts in the area are helping fuel the burn as 60 miles per hour gusts were reported in the area just after 3 p.m. Mandatory evacuations are ordered for the areas of Nogal Canyon, Bonito Canyon, Ski Apache, Tanbark Canyon, Church Street, Ranchman’s Camp, Loma Grande, Forest Road 127A-1834 Gate, Cora Dutton, and Magado Creek. Several evacuation centers have been opened up for residents in the area. Those evacuations centers include: Nazarean Church Camp in Alto, NM, Capitan Senior Center in Capitan, NM, and the Ruidoso Downs Senior Center at 393 Highway 70 West Rd. in Ruidoso Downs, NM. By New Mexico Fire Information • 3 hours ago LINCOLN COUNTY - Evacuation Notices are in effect for Nogal Canyon, Bonito Canyon, and the Ski Apache Area after a wildfire was reported on the morning of Monday, April 26, 2021. The Three Rivers Fire is located 1/2 a mile above Three Rivers Campground on the backside of the White Mountains of the Smokey Bear Ranger District. Smoke is highly visible from Highway 54. The fire is currently 30 acres. Fire personnel will use a combination of tactics from the air and ground to fully suppress the fire. The weather today is expected to be windy, with 20+ mph gusts from the southwest. It grew to 9.5 square miles by late Monday, according to KRQE, and was 0% contained. It had spread almost to the Ski Apache resort and into the South Fork Canyon area. The wildfire was being driven by steep terrain and extreme fire weather conditions, including gusty winds and low humidity levels, according to Laura Rabon, a public affairs officer with the Lincoln National Forest.
