A $2.7 million renovation at St. Bonfice Hospitalâs mental health building has transformed the ward to look less like one and more like a home for thousands of patients who seek care each year.
Those renovations were completed in April, two years after the hospital began fundraising for an initial $1.6 million to make improvements to the McEwen Building, which houses 34 patient beds. In the time since, 92 donors stepped forward to help foot the bill. Financial support also came from the province and the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority to fund the buildingâs safety upgrades.

As he had done for five previous Boxing Days, Junel Malapad laced up his runners on Saturday for his annual fundraising run as part of his quest to “Change Boxing Day to Running Day.”
But this year’s run was different in that it was the culmination of a year-long effort to celebrate his turning 50 with a special achievement. In January, Malapad decided to run the equivalent of 50 marathons this year – one a week – and raise awareness and funds for a different charity each month.
