Removal of human waste from rail tracks may soon be mechanised | India News

Representative image NEW DELHI: A self-propelled railway track scavenging vehicle may soon replace manual scavenging and cleaning that is still practiced to remove human waste on railway tracks. The multifunctional vehicle requires only one person along with a driver to carry out the automatic cleaning of the track. Developed by the Bhopal-based National Institute of Technical Teachers’ Training and Research (NITTTR), it can be used as a material/ garbage transport vehicle from track to road by Indian Railways. “It can also be used as maintenance/inspection vehicle and disinfectant spraying vehicle,” said the science ministry in a statement, noting that men and women are currently seen removing excreta from the tracks with brooms and metal plates despite the ban on manual scavenging in the country since 1993.

Three days after the first case was reported from Manavadar taluka in Junagadh, bird flu cases have been confirmed from two more districts of the state – Vadodara and Surat. After 2017, when the disease was confined in pockets of Ahmedabad, this is for the second time that the outbreak of the avian flu has surfaced in the state. Samples of five crows from Vasantpura village of Vadodara’s Savli taluka and Memon Kabrastan from Bardoli town have confirmed that they died of the flu. The samples were sent to Bhopal-based National Institute of High Security Animal Diseases (NIHSAD).
