A couple hundred community members of all ages gathered at Rancho Bernardo High on Saturday morning to assemble more than 37,000 meals for those in need overseas.
The school’s Fight Against Hunger Club organized the event after spending the past year conducting fundraising efforts made more difficult than usual due to the pandemic.
Club President Gina Lee said the club had to raise $10,000 to cover the meal ingredients, shipment to countries such as Peru and other event costs.

Del Norte High senior Vivian Chung was recently named first alternate in the Distinguished Young Women of California program for the Class of 2021.
“I was really surprised,” Chung said. “I was watching the program online and (the other contestants) were so good. I was in awe of the other young ladies from around the state and was definitely shocked.”
Her accomplishments at the county and state competitions earned her a combined $6,350 in prizes. As the DYW of Greater San Diego County she received $1,000 plus $250 for the Hicks Family Self Expression Award. At the state competition she won $5,100, which consisted of $4,000 as first alternate, the $700 Interview Award and $400 Self-Expression Award.

The Poway 4-H Club has been keeping busy with projects and community service, despite going virtual due to the pandemic, said President Ryan Katz.
Poway 4-H is a youth-run organization, Katz said. While the organization is agriculturally based, the Poway club leans more to science, technology, engineering and math, as well as community service, he added. “We’re just a big group of kids running a small community (organization) and trying to make the place better,” Katz said.
Members can be ages 5 to 19, but must be at least 9 years old to show animals, Katz said. The Poway club has about 30 members, he added.
