3 Fort Campbell, Kentucky, is entering the latest frontier of flight simulation technology with the Army-owned and operated Black Hawk Aircrew Trainer, or BAT, a highly immersive device that the installation began using May 3.
Boasting a complete UH-60 cockpit, state-of-the-art visual systems and a dedicated operating station for instructors, the BAT allows pilots to build mission readiness while saving the Army both time and money.
“Since the Army has the rights to the software, it’s not a proprietary issue,” said Tim Hight, chief of Training Support, Training Division, Directorate of Plans, Training, Mobilization and Security. “As the aircraft gets upgraded, the simulator is directly in step. In the past, it cost the Army a lot of money to update the software, but now that the Army has bought the rights, we can stay concurrent with what the aircraft has on board.”
FORT DRUM â Base and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers officials conducted a ground-breaking ceremony Wednesday for the 10th Combat Aviation Brigadeâs new $21.7 million unmanned aircraft system at Wheeler-Sack Army Airfield.
Col. Jeffery Lucas, Fort Drum garrison commander, said in a prepared statement that the event marked not just the beginning of a new construction project but the end of a long, collaborative process.
âA major construction project like this only happens after years of strategic planning, environmental studies, funding requests and justifications, structural planning, contract writing, bidding and rewarding,â he said. âItâs a long road to get here, and Iâm incredibly proud of the many on the staff in the garrison whose ongoing work empowers readiness here every day in countless ways.â

The U.S. Army’s 82nd Airborne Division is executing several operations across Europe, throughout the first half of the month, during Swift Response 21. This multinational exercise includes various operations performed in host countries Estonia, Bulgaria and Romania, until May 14, 2021.
Swift Response is part of Defender-Europe 21, an annual large-scale military event, led by the U.S. Immediate Response Force, which develops interoperability between the U.S., NATO allies and European partners. This year, Defender-Europe will engage over 28,000 forces from 26 countries, which will be performing simultaneous operations in multiple training areas.
These special operations include air assaults and live fire exercises, designed to show airborne interoperability. Also, Joint Forcible Entries, which are airborne strategic jumps, are set to take place at nighttime in Estonia and Bulgaria.
