DVIDS - News - Air Force forecasters vital to 12th CAB mission

3 KATTERBACH KASERNE, Germany (JAN. 28, 2021) – Knowing the weather for the day is important to many. To the aviators of 12th Combat Aviation Brigade, it is crucial to mission success. The Airmen of Detachment 4, 7th Combat Weather Squadron provide that critical information for the Griffin brigade. “We provide weather briefings for all the aviation assets here at Katterbach Army Heliport,” said Air Force Tech. Sgt. Jeremy Farr, NCO in charge of Airfield Operations. “Any helicopter launching from the airfield receives weather warnings and advisories for a five nautical-mile radius of the airfield, in addition to conditions en-route and the final destination.” The mission of the detachment is to provide decision-grade weather intelligence and combat-credible forces to the 12th CAB. “We have nine Airmen assigned with normally one deployed to eastern Europe,” said Farr. “(As the only Air Force personnel assigned to Katterbach) We do get looks when we a

(Jan. 28, 2021) The success of a large off-post training exercise in 2018 has 10th Mountain Division (LI) and Fort Drum officials working with federal, state and private agencies and organizations to develop a comprehensive process for similar training opportunities in the future. The 10th Mountain Division’s 10th Combat Aviation Brigade (CAB) conducted 10 days of readiness scenarios in April 2018, with Fort Drum as the launch pad that took hundreds of Soldiers across the North Country to Vermont by ground and air. It presented units preparing for deployment with real-world challenges and simulated threats difficult to replicate within the confines of Fort Drum by expanding the training area with multiple air and ground routes.

Killed in the crash were Chief Warrant Officer 5 Steven Skoda, 54, of Rochester, and formerly of Johnstown, Chief Warrant Officer 4 Christian Koch, 39, of Honeoye Falls, and Chief Warrant Officer 2 Daniel Prial, 30 of Rochester, according to the National Guard. Skoda was the son of the late Frank and Barbara Skoda of Johnstown and was a 1985 graduate of Johnstown High School. The three were experienced pilots with past deployments to Afghanistan, officials said Friday.

16 WIESBADEN, Germany Echo Company of the 1-214th Aviation Battalion, 12th Combat Aviation Brigade, based at Wiesbaden Army Airfield provides a unique capability to the U.S. Army Europe-Africa commander that many people do not know exists. Army fixed-wing aviation provides small jet and turbo-prop platforms such as the UC-35 and C-12 that can fly quickly over long distances and land at small airfields. “Our normal rotational missions provide a critical lifeline to forward supported areas,” said Lt. Col. Matthew McGraw, Commander of the 1-214th Aviation Battalion. “For the first few months of the pandemic, Army fixed-wing was the only way to get critical medical supplies like testing kits and personal protective equipment, and to retrograde COVID samples for US Army rotational forces in Poland, Romania, and Greece.”
