ST. MARIE: ST. MARIE: The death of Betty Jean St. Marie, aged 75 years, of Meota, occurred on October 8, 2011 at Battlefords Union Hospital. WHELER, ELLIOT CHARLES: Elliot Charles (Slim) Wheler, 1930 - 2014. Elliot was born in Weyburn, Saskatchewan and passed away peacefully at Battlefords Union Hospital on Monday, April 7, 2014. A memorial service was held at St Vital s Parish on Friday, April 11th. Elliot is survived by Fran his loving wife of 60 years, children Jim (Joanne), Sheri (Russell), Ken (Francesca), Don (Holly), Doug (Joanne), Greg, Mark (Barb), 17 grandchildren, and 9 great grandchildren, brother Gordon (Kay), sisters Audrey (Gordon) and Margaret. Slim worked as a mechanic at Boyd Brother s Garage in North Battleford and at the Department of Highways. He was very active with many organizations in the community. The Wheler family would like to thank all of the wonderful people of the Battlefords and beyond for their support, cards, phone calls, and unending supply of food gifts. Howard Weitzel was born on Dec. 8, 1921, the third oldest child, to Alvin and Maude (Stevens) Weitzel at Edam. He received his elementary education (Grades 1 through 8) at Horse Hill School, which was located nine miles northwest of Edam.
When his older brother left home, Howard, as the second oldest son, had to quit school to work on the farm. Farming then bore little resemblance to the machine-driven mega-farms of today. Farms were much smaller and labour-intensive. Farmers had to be physically strong and able to work long hours. Howard was no exception. He remembers farming with horses, the back-breaking labour of picking roots and rocks, stooking grain sheaves by hand, and milking 12 cows daily. During the Dirty Thirties, he worked with a threshing crew for $2 a day. But despite the emphasis on work with little time for recreation, there was an upside.
A widow in North Battleford, Sask., says her husband received inadequate treatment after going to the emergency room with chest pains. Tom Thomas, 34, had been diagnosed with COVID-19 a week before.
