High-Level Conference on Public Procurement - Hoofdinhoud On 7 May, from 09h15 to 16h00 (Lisbon time), there will be a High-Level Conference on Public Procurement - “Steering the Future: Green, sustainable and digital procurement”, co-organised by the Portuguese Presidency of the Council of the European Union and by the European Commission. This conference is the main European event on the subject to be held in the first half of 2021, with the aim of looking at the challenges faced by Europe in terms of green and sustainable public procurement, the importance of the digital transformation and the potential of structured information. The Portuguese Minister for Infrastructure and Housing, Pedro Nuno Santos, and the European Commissioner for the Internal Market, Thierry Breton, will participate in the opening session. The closing session will be led by the Portuguese Secretary of State for Infrastructure, Jorge Delgado.

Sustainable mining requires responsibility from economic stakeholders

“Minerals are an essential part of modern life, as the global demand for minerals such as lithium has clearly shown. There is no road to carbon neutrality without clean, digital technology and there is no clean, digital technology without raw materials”, according to João Pedro Matos Fernandes, Portuguese Minister for the Environment and Climate Action, speaking at the opening of the High-Level Conference on Green Mining, which was held today under the Portuguese Presidency of the Council of the European Union. Bearing in mind the increase in world population and the levels of emissions arising from the production and consumption of goods and services, the Minister emphasised the need to rethink how we extract, produce and consume. On this subject, he recalled that “mining activities should adopt a sustainable approach to planning and execution, focusing on four key factors: environmental stability, appropriate soil use, economic value and social responsibility”.

Virtual conversation with Portuguese Ambassador Domingos Fezas Vital O Jornal LOWELL – UMass Lowell’s Saab Center for Portuguese Studies will present a virtual conversation with Portuguese Ambassador Domingos Fezas Vital on Thursday, May 20 from 5 to 7 p.m. Moderated by Prof. Jarrod Hayes, an associate professor of International Relations at UMass Lowell, this lecture will address the U.S.-Portugal bilateral ties from the earliest years of the United States, when Portugal recognized the United States in 1791, following the Revolutionary War. Since then the two countries have collaborated on a range of issues.  In this conversation, Ambassador Fezas Vital will discuss his almost seven years as the Portuguese Ambassador to United States, the Portuguese Presidency of the Council of the European Union, and accomplishments of Portugal in the EU. 

Launching of the Porto Declaration on Cancer Research

The Porto Declaration on Cancer Research strengthens the commitment of the Trio Presidency of the Council of the European Union (Germany, Portugal and Slovenia) to significantly reduce cancer mortality by 2030, with a goal of 75% of cancer patients in Europe surviving for at least 10 years. High-level Conference on Green Mining

As part of the Portuguese Presidency of the Council of the European Union, the High-level Conference on Green Mining will be held on Wednesday, 5 May at 09h10 (Lisbon time). Participating in this international conference will be Portuguese and international entities, businesses, representatives of the European Commission and associations of relevance in the mining sector; they will debate the principles of green mining and the contribution of the mining industry to decarbonisation, while highlighting the resilience and innovation of the international mineral exploration sector. The aim will also be to provide a forum for discussing and contributing to the conception, promotion and evaluation of public policies and activities in the field of geological resources, in a perspective based on sustainable development.
