Serena Sanborn, Waterville Creates’ education and outreach coordinator, was honored May 1 with the Art Educator of the Year Award by the Maine Art Education Association.

Sanborn received the Art Educator of the Year Award in the Supervisory category. A formal, statewide recognition ceremony took place virtually. The association is a statewide professional organization whose members are committed to excellence in visual arts education.
Waterville Creates develops and delivers a wide array of arts education and outreach programs that serve Waterville area residents and their families. It works with a host of organizational partners to maximize its reach and ensure access for a broad array of community members.

Mainers take a knee for photo project aimed at combatting racism

Those are some of the themes artist Titi de Baccarat had in mind when he organized The Kneeling Art Photography project. He enlisted 10 Maine photographers to create portraits of dozens of Mainers taking a knee. The project explores the meaning and evolution of the gesture through the images and words, especially in the aftermath of the death of George Floyd and the conviction of his killer.
Just days after workers at two Portland employers voted to unionize, truck drivers and mechanics for Shaw’s Supermarkets in Maine have gone on strike.
About 80 members of Teamsters Local Union No. 340 in South Portland walked off the job early Monday at a Shaw’s distribution center in Wells and a maintenance shop in Scarborough.
The members work for Clifford W. Perham Inc., a trucking subsidiary of Shaw’s. The Teamsters have been without a contract there since last August, according to the union, which was seeking better pay, retirement contributions and health coverage.
But Shaw’s parent Albertsons Cos. Inc. (NYSE: ACI) hasn’t been at the bargaining table since February, when a labor negotiator for the corporation stopped working, the local’s business agent, Joe Piccone, told Mainebiz Monday.
