HANCOCK, MI The Portage Health Foundation has issued a request for proposals to increase access to local food markets.
The aim of the farmer’s market capacity building and food access grants is to provide immediate funding to build capacity of and access to active farmer’s markets in Baraga, Houghton, Keweenaw and Ontonagon counties.
PHF expects to award up to $35,000. The maximum grant amount is $5,000. Officials would like proposals to support sustainability elements to ensure the ongoing delivery of services.

Veridea development proposal
The development would open up Lakeshore Drive to the sky, but this has been criticized for separating downtown businesses north of Shelden Avenue from their rear customer parking.
More than 100 people gathered on Zoom for Wednesday’s Houghton City Council meeting to voice their concerns, criticisms and support for the proposal put forward by the Veridea Group on Tuesday.
The city leadership has been working with Veridea on a plan to sell and develop the area currently occupied by the large parking deck between Lakeshore Drive and Bridgeview Park.
“Okay, before we get to the opportunity for the public to address the council, I would like to read a statement,” Mayor Robert Backon said.

The Copper Country community proved why it is Copper Country Strong this year by raising $394,514.28 in support of 18 non-profit organizations that serve Baraga, Houghton, Keweenaw and Ontonagon counties.
The funds were raised as part of Portage Health Foundation’s (PHF) fourth annual #GivingTuesday campaign. PHF is matching $200,000 this year, meaning $594,514.28 will be presented to the organizations. In total through four years this campaign has helped Copper Country non-profits raise $1,267,381.88.
“This year that funding is even more vital for our non-profit sector,” said Kevin Store, Executive Director of PHF. “To see nearly $400,000 in community donations is absolutely incredible. CCISD
The Copper Country Intermediate School District Board of Education held its regular monthly meeting virtually on Tuesday, Dec. 15.
Superintendent Stockero shared with the board that two Copper Country stories have made their way to other states and the CCISD had received calls asking about them. The first calls came from schools in Colorado and Florida. They had read about the Tiny House that the CTE construction class completed. The Colorado and Florida schools thought the project was great and wanted to understand the process so they could try to replicate the project.
The next call came from an Autism Specialist from a school district in the Twin Cities in Minnesota. The Twin City superintendent shared the news article about the Core Board with the staff and they decided it is something they would like to implement as well. In an effort to not let the COVID pandemic stifle the futures of our youth, the Keweenaw Economic Development Alliance (KEDA) is continuing its efforts to raise funds to support students who are looking to pursue career technical education after high school.
