SINGAPORE (Reuters) -BHP Group Ltd said on Thursday it completed its first refuelling of a ship with biofuel this month in a trial run that is part of its efforts to reduce carbon emissions.

It was also the first time that a ship has been refuelled with biofuel in Singapore, the world’s largest bunkering hub.
A biofuel blend derived from certified sustainable feedstock sources such as cooking oil, crude tall oil and sewage sludge was used on April 4 to refuel the 81,000 deadweight tonne dry bulk carrier Kira Oldendorff which was on its way from Australia to Europe.

BHP Group completed its first refueling of a ship with biofuel this month in a trial run that is part of its efforts to reduce carbon emissions.

Global resources company BHP, German shipping company Oldendorff Carriers, and advanced biofuels pioneer GoodFuels, with the support of the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA), conducted the first marine biofuel trial involving an ocean-going vessel bunkered in Singapore on 4 April 2021.
As part of the trial, the 2020-built 81,290 deadweight tonne dry bulk carrier Kira Oldendorff was refuelled with “drop-in” advanced biofuel blended with conventional fossil fuels.
The key objectives of the biofuel bunkering trial include understanding the behaviour of the fuel (such as emissions), assessing engine and vessel operational performance during the trial as well as exploring the technical and commercial merits and challenges of biofuels as a marine fuel. MABUX World Bunker Index decreased during the week. The 380 HSFO index has decreased from 407.92 USD/MT to 420.77 USD/ MT (+12.85 USD), VLSFO has added 15.16 USD: from 497.76 USD/MT up to 512.92 USD/MT. MGO LS increased by 12.34 USD from 572.70 USD/MT to 585.04 USD/MT.
The Global Scrubber Spread (SS) – the difference in price between 380 HSFO and VLSFO –increased during the week and averaged 91.79 USD (87.54 USD last week).
SS Spread in Rotterdam has decreased during the week from 102.00 USD up to 100.00 USD (-2.00 USD), the average SS spread for the week has increased by 6.66 USD from 96.67 last week to 103.33 USD. In Singapore, SS Spread has also slightly decreased during the week – by 3.00 USD: from 115.00 USD to 112.00 USD, while the average weekly SS index rose by 7.33 USD: from 108.17 USD last week to 115.50 USD.
