Uniland scraps trade hub for solar panel farm at Buffalo Lakeside Commerce Park

Uniland Development Corp. is dropping its plan to construct a transportation, logistics and shipping hub in South Buffalo – as part of a collaborative effort around international trade – because the land it was targeting can t easily support the facilities without prohibitive costs. Instead, the Amherst developer is proposing to build a 5-megawatt solar panel farm on the same 20.3-acre brownfield property at 255 Ship Canal Parkway. Officials are currently meeting with solar contractors and operators to select a partner. “We’re changing our strategy for that 20-acre site,” said Uniland spokeswoman Jill Pawlik. Neither Pawlik nor the Buffalo Urban Development Corp. – which owns the property in the Buffalo Lakeside Commerce Park – had details on the plan, which is still being developed. Uniland said it expects the project would produce enough power to supply electricity to about 800 households.

The Challenge of Hurricane Response Amid the COVID-19 Pandemic

Share But there is another challenge for coastal communities: not wanting to move. Pacifica, California, sits precariously on an eroding cliff, and town officials have repeatedly pressed defiant residents to move inland. The West Coast faces sea-level rise at a rate higher than the global average, yet Pacifica residents are demanding stronger seawalls to protect their homes rather than giving in to calls to relocate.  Ultimately, the United States’ vast coastal areas will likely be seen as too valuable to abandon. Coastal counties and their many major cities account for over 40 percent of the country’s jobs and almost half of its gross domestic product (GDP), and many investor and retirement assets lie on the coasts.

State Receiver questions Chester s fiscal stability

In a report that alleges that the Chester Stormwater Authority offered the Philadelphia Union to reduce its fees in exchange for land for a basketball facility and that claims Chester City Hall is top heavy and elected officials there have not contributed to the city s fiscal stability, the state-appointed Receiver laid out actions needed to be taken to begin to steer the city toward financial solvency. In response to the Receiver for the City of Chester Status Update filed with Commonwealth Court on Dec. 2, both city and Stormwater Authority officials had diametrically opposing views to the report s findings. In the report, the Receiver noted that the office had been contacted by several city businesses, including the Philadelphia Union, who told them that Joseph Oxman, solicitor for the Stormwater Authority of the City of Chester, had approached the soccer organization to offer a reduction in its stormwater fees if it provided the authority land to build a basketball facility.
