FDLE: Major crime dropped nearly 10% in Marion during COVID year

The number of murders dropped from 31 in 2019 to 19 in 2020. Robbery dropped from 211 to 136, and rape declined from 227 to 184. Meanwhile, larceny cases dropped from 4,947 to 4,289, motor vehicle thefts dipped from 696 to 582 and burglary dropped from 1,198 to 1,141. Overall, there were 7,569 major offenses in 2020, down from 8,397 the year prior. The law enforcement agencies that primarily handle those types of crimes – the Marion County Sheriff s Office and the Ocala, Belleview and Dunnellon police departments –have reported more than a 40 percent clearance rate in solving these crimes, according to the FDLE report. The pandemic did not have a similar effect on deaths related to motor vehicle crashes. As the Star-Banner has previously reported, that number actually went up in Marion, from 96 in 2019 to 110 in 2020. Law officers blamed distracted driving and excessive risk taking, even though traffic volume was lighter during the first months of the pandemic.
