Pittsburgh mayor cracks down on construction fraud

Dive Brief: In light of recent incidents involving unreported cash payments by subcontractors on construction projects, Pittsburgh Mayor William Peduto has signed an executive order to combat construction fraud, promote worker safety and protect city tax revenue.  The Construction Fraud Executive Order cracks down on fraudulent construction companies that commit tax, insurance and workers’ compensation fraud. It also aims to stop the practice of paying workers in cash to avoid taxes. Such moves allow corrupt firms to outbid honest ones and fuel a cycle of lost wages, decreased tax revenue and unsafe and hazardous work sites, according to a news release from Peduto’s office.

Biden picks Brockton Judge Angel Kelley for MA federal court position

President Joe Biden is reaching into the Massachusetts Superior Court to fill a U.S. District Court judgeship in the Bay State, selecting Judge Angel Kelley to fill an open slot on the federal bench. If confirmed, Kelley would become the second African American woman judge and the second Asian American judge to serve on the U.S. District Court in Massachusetts, the White House said. A 2009 nominee of former Gov. Deval Patrick, Kelley initially served on the Brockton District Court and was elevated in 2013 to the Superior Court, where she has served as the regional administrative judge. Kelley has twice appeared before the Governor s Council for hearings, where councilors confirmed her despite some concerns that she arrived on the bench with too little legal experience in Massachusetts.

Port Authority Chairman Kevin O’Toole said the move is part of the Port Authority’s broader effort to transform its operations to compete in a dynamic, growing air cargo market. The airport already is a major international shipping hub for leading carriers such as FedEx and UPS.
