Nqaba Bhanga will relinquish his mayoral chain in seven days’ time and elections for a new mayor will be held in Nelson Mandela Bay.
The Port Elizabeth High Court has ordered speaker of the Nelson Mandela Bay metro to convene a council meeting within seven days to elect the new executive mayor.
Bhanga was elected mayor of Nelson Mandela Bay on 4 December during a chaotic council meeting presided by Patriotic Alliance councillor Marlon Daniels.
After 46 days in office, Nelson Mandela Bay Mayor Nqaba Bhanga will relinquish his mayoral chain in seven days’ time, and elections for a new mayor will be held in the metro.

The DA in the Eastern Cape has presented itself as a party with a plan before the local government elections later in 2021.
Speaking at a press briefing on Thursday on the collapse of local municipalities in the province, DA provincial leader Nqaba Bhanga blasted co-operative governance and traditional affairs MEC Xolile Nqatha for being “absent”.
Bhanga and Nqatha are set to square off at the Port Elizabeth High Court next week as the MEC wants the DA leader’s election as Nelson Mandela Bay mayor nullified.
Nelson Mandela Bay council speaker Buyelwa Mafaya made no attempt to reconvene the chaotic December 4 council meeting after she was forced out the council chamber by four men believed to be bodyguards.

Ten bullet cartridge cases, allegedly fired from the same firearm, and at least one bullet were retrieved from the scene where Jacques Richard Roberts was gunned down.
This is according to forensic expert Warrant Officer Wesley McLean, who testified in the Port Elizabeth High Court on Wednesday.
