Michelin stars are handed out to the best-of-the-best restaurants every year. Some places will retain their star some will get one for the first time and some will lose them. 2020 s announcements - due in October - were shelved due to the coronavirus pandemic. The new list was announced online last night. It was thought that judges would be kind in light of the unprecedented struggle the hospitality industry has faced. And indeed that turned out to be the case with only six operational restaurants losing a star.

A total of 20 restaurants were demoted or deleted from the Michelin Guide Great Britain & Ireland 2021, many as a result of having closed due to the Coronavirus pandemic.
Amid speculation prior to last night s (25 January) virtual ceremony as to whether Michelin would demote any restaurants still operating in light of the ongoing Coronavirus crisis, it has emerged that six restaurants that remain open have lost stars in this year s Guide.
Jason Atherton s Social Eat House in Soho and Nordic restaurant Aquavit in St James’s both lost the single stars they respectively held; while Marlon Abela’s Japanese restaurant Umu in Mayfair was demoted from two Michelin stars to one.
London restaurants Core by Clare Smyth and Hélène Darroze at The Connaught have both been awarded three stars in the Michelin Guide Great Britain & Ireland 2021.
Last night s (25 January) virtual event to commemorate the launch of the latest edition of the red book saw a total of 22 restaurants receive new star ratings, with three new two-star restaurants announced and 17 new one-star restaurants recognised.
