LEESBURG – Four Lake County residents who tested positive for COVID-19 are among the latest-reported deaths attributed to the coronavirus, according to Monday’s update from the Florida Department of Health.
The latest-reported fatalities raise the area’s COVID-related death toll to 835, including 593 in Lake and 242 in Sumter.
Details about many recent local deaths have not been immediately available, due to a change in the way the DOH reports fatalities on its website. DOH offices in Tallahassee and in Lake County did not respond to emails seeking information.
However, based on guidance provided by the CDC, deaths are considered COVID-19 related if doctors, medical examiners or coroners determine the coronavirus was a primary or contributing factor. To help with that determination, a COVID-19 test can be given posthumously, especially if a person had not been tested prior to death.
