Traffic stop ends in handgun and OWI arrest By: Maura Johnson Photo courtesy: La Porte County Sheriff’s Office LA PORTE COUNTY, Ind. – One person was arrested Tuesday after a traffic stop led to the discovery of alcohol and a Glock handgun in a vehicle, the La Porte County Sheriff’s Office reported. At 12:37 a.m. on March 2, a captain with the La Porte County Sheriff’s office was traveling west on Springland Avenue when he noticed a vehicle traveling east on Springland Avenue ignore a four-way stop sign, reports said. The captain initiated a traffic stop on Springland Avenue near Karwick Road.

Roman is a 2-year-old male Belgian Malinois, trained in narcotics detection and tracking/apprehension. Deputy Austin Wells was selected as the next handler for the division several months ago. Earlier this week, Wells and others traveled to Vohne Liche Kennels in Denver, Ind. to select a new K9. K9 Roman helps fill a missing role for the division. Earlier this year, K9 Jäger retired after serving many years in La Porte County. The addition of K9 Roman brings the division back up to full strength.
