Sunburn — The morning read of what’s hot in Florida politics — 5.6.21 Let’s start the morning with some great news about two really good people: Aly is a vice president of Accounts with On3PR, while Omar is deputy chief of staff to Speaker Chris Sprowls. — @NickConfessore: The fact that this private corporate administrative decision is being covered as something akin to a Supreme Court ruling — rightly so, I think — is the best illustration I can imagine of the sheer power Facebook has achieved over the public square — @BostonJoan: Imagine spending millions to offload blame only to have it returned like a bill lost in the mail, which is now overdue.

Blinken Taking Nuland to Ukraine with Him

SUBSCRIBE to EIR Daily Alert Service Blinken Taking Nuland to Ukraine with Him May 5, 2021 (EIRNS) U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken landed in Kiev today with Undersecretary of State Victoria Nuland by his side. The Associated Press admitted that Nuland’s presence is “likely to irritate Russia,” given her history and orchestration of the 2014 Maidan coup, including coordination with openly neo-Nazi leaders and networks in the country. AP presented this as “Nuland’s advocacy for reform-minded, pro-Western Ukrainian politicians incurred the Kremlin’s wrath.” Other media sources point out there will be “tension” in Blinken’s trip, because of his focus on fighting corruption and institutional reform. Money from the IMF will be dependent on Ukraine carrying out the reforms the U.S. demands, UNIAN Ukrainian news agency warns, and reporting that Blinken will demand results.

Poland s disciplinary regime for judges contrary to EU law, says ECJ advisor

The EU s highest court looks likelier to deal another blow to Poland s controversial judicial reforms. In an opinion released on Thursday, Evgeni Tanchev, the European Court of Justice s advocate general, said the changes were contrary to EU law . The ECJ still has to rule on the case and won t necessarily follow Tanchev s view. Brussels and Warsaw have been embroiled in a legal battle over Poland s reforms to the judiciary since they were introduced in 2017. Poland says the reforms are necessary to make the judicial system more efficient but the EU says they weaken its independence. Tanchev s latest opinion pertains to disciplinary measures the Polish government has rolled out against judges.
