It is with great sadness that the family of Alma Ongaro announces her sudden passing on Thursday, May 20, 2021 at Hogarth Riverview Manor. Alma was born December 18, 1936 in Fort William. She married Germano Ongaro on November 18, 1961. They moved to their home on Edward Street in 1972 where they raised their four children. Together they loved travelling, dancing at the Polish Hall on Saturday nights and many volunteer and social activities with their family, friends and fellow parishioners at St. Dominic s Church, where she was a Charter Member of the Catholic Women s League as well as a member of the Seniors Club.
Following her husband s passing in 1988, she continued to be a very active and dedicated volunteer within her Church community and Catholic Women s League. She also enjoyed many years as a volunteer with Thunder Bay Christmas Cheer Fund and was a proud Election Returning Officer.
She’s sweet and loving, with a soft spot for song and dance. She’s frugal and factual and suffers no foolishness. Firmly principled, she’s always ready to insist upon what’s right except when she’s pulling some hilarious stunt.
A portion of Marcy Avenue will be renamed for the former Polish Hall manager.
The Riverhead Town Board announced Tuesday it will ceremoniously rename the portion of Marcy Avenue around Polish Hall in honor of late town resident Zbigniew “Ziggy” Wilinski.
Town Supervisor Yvette Aguiar announced the proposal to rename the street “Ziggy’s Way” at a Town Board meeting Tuesday. She also presented Mr. Wilinski’s wife of 48 years, Wanda, and their children and grandchildren with a proclamation recognizing Mr. Wilinski’s commitment to the Riverhead community.
The longtime president and manager of Polish Hall, and a former Riverhead postmaster, Mr. Wilinski died last month.
Ziggy Wilinski, 74, was a champion for Riverhead and the Polish Hall he managed with love
Around Riverhead, he was known simply as Ziggy.
Synonymous with Polish Hall and easily identified by his welcoming smile, Zbigniew Wilinski was remembered this week as a champion for his hometown.
“He is an icon in this community,” remarked Riverhead Town Councilman Frank Beyrodt during an impromptu tribute at the start of last week’s Town Board work session.“He was someone who always had a smile on his face.”
Mr. Beyrodt called his friend, who died last Tuesday after a relatively brief battle with pancreatic cancer, the “unofficial mayor of Polish Town.”
