Clements announces ‘Stronger Support for Safer Communities’ plan The Monroe News State Rep. TC Clements, R-Temperance, and other members of the Michigan House of Representatives who have worked in law enforcement announced a plan to support law enforcement, strengthen the criminal justice system and expand community policing statewide. The legislators were joined by county sheriffs, local police officers and representatives from the Chiefs of Police, the Fraternal Order of Police, the Michigan Sheriffs’ Association, and the Police Officers Association of Michigan. Clements began his career in law enforcement as a police officer in Florida. In addition to a background in patrol, investigations, school resource and as a public information officer, he advanced and concluded his tenure in law enforcement as the Deputy Chief of Police for the Eliot Police Department in Maine.

A new package of bills introduced Thursday to the House budget plan will emphasize changes in training and equipment but, possibly more importantly, offer funds to grow department staffs. While there have been bills pushed forth in the past year that are focused on training and policy decisions when it comes to police reform, this pack of bills really focuses on retention. Helping departments keep the officers they have and bring in good ones. “I’ve been in this business for over 40 years and I can tell you that morale is at its lowest point I’ve ever seen,” said Ken Grabowski of the Police Officers Association of Michigan.

Deputies to get 7 percent wage hikes in new pact Deputy sheriffs working for Monroe County will receive 7 percent hikes in their base wages over the next four years under a tentative labor agreement reached between the county and the labor union. County commissioners okayed 9-0 Tuesday the new collective bargaining accord with the Deputy Sheriffs Association that was recommended by a negotiating team. The four-year agreement replaces the former contract that would have expired June 30, 2023. The new expiration date is Dec. 31, 2024. The pact affects 66 deputy sheriffs in the association, said Aundrea Armstrong, human resources director for the county and a member of the bargaining team. Negotiating on behalf of the deputies were Sheriff Troy Goodnough and the Police Officers Association of Michigan

Attorney Victor J. Mastromarco Jr. on Feb. 9 filed the lawsuit in Saginaw County Circuit Court on behalf of current officers Bradley Holp, 37; Roger Pate, 45; Matthew Carpus, 35; and Steven Lautner, 38; and former officer Richard Thompson, 48. The city of Saginaw and the Police Officers Association of Michigan, or POAM, are named as defendants.
