SAN DIEGO
When the verdict was delivered in the trial of former Minneapolis police Officer Derick Chauvin, San Diego police Sgt. Harold Oliver was in his office, watching a live stream of CNN on his cellphone with bated breath.
While Oliver, president of the San Diego chapter of the Black Police Officers Association, felt “mixed emotions” in response to the conviction of Chauvin in George Floyd’s killing, Oliver said the verdict was “a step in the right direction in the healing process.” He added that the conviction will hopefully allow law enforcement agencies to rebuild trust within communities they serve.

Three other candidates sought the endorsement for mayor from POAD.
Bill Anhut, POAD President, said that Dabaja was the right choice.
“The Police Officers Association of Dearborn is proud to endorse Council President Susan Dabaja on her historic run for mayor,” he said. “The officers of the POAD recognize Council President Dabaja’s support of public safety over the past seven years and look forward to her leadership in the mayor’s office.”
The endorsement process involves a rigorous questionnaire and personal interview after the mayoral candidates must apply for the endorsement.

A&M Church of Christ hosted a fundraiser put together by the College Station Police Officers Association this past Saturday, benefiting Lorelai Adams and her fight against cancer.
Lorelai was diagnosed with Ewingâs sarcoma in April 2019, a month later she embarked on an 8-month treatment plan, receiving chemo in Temple every other week at Baylor Scott and White McLane Childrenâs Specialty Clinic.

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) Mayor Todd Gloria unveiled a $4.6 billion budget proposal Thursday aimed at getting San Diego out from the grips of the pandemic.
The city recently received $306 million in federal stimulus funds, allowing it to shore up deficits this fiscal year and the one that starts July 1, 2021. Amid a potentially subsiding pandemic that has devastated our local economy, our attention is now turning toward recovery, and this budget invests in that, Gloria said at a news conference Thursday.

In 2014 the San Diego Police Department was criticized because its officers had failed to consistently collect data related to race during traffic stops.
At the time San Diego Police Chief William Lansdowne and his top deputies were not all that concerned about the matter. In fact, according to The Voice of San Diego, they said residents didn’t believe racial profiling was a problem and the issue “hasn’t come up in years and years in interactions with the community” a statement that received pushback from the NAACP, the local Black Police Officers Association and others.
Two years later San Diego State University researchers shared results from a long awaited study that found officers were more likely to subject minorities to field interviews and were more likely to search Black and Hispanic drivers, despite the fact those drivers were less likely to actually have contraband, than White drivers.
