When Richard Vajda was police chief in Harrisburg in the 1980s, he liked to stay closely plugged in to what was happening with his officers and around the city.
He called the patrol lieutenant every morning, 365 days a year, whether he was on vacation or home, to ask what happened overnight.
When people asked why Vajda insisted on calling every day, he told them: “I need to know what’s going on.”
He did this for his entire tenure as chief from 1982 to 1988, said John Goshert, who worked for Vajda as commander of the vice unit.

The threat is not over as state capitals and Washington, D.C. remain on high alert, bracing for possible chaos ahead of Wednesday’s inauguration. Armed protestors took up positions in Ohio, Michigan and a handful of states on Sunday, and those were small and peaceful.
