NEW DELHI | LUCKNOW: The protesting farmer unions announced that their plans for a chakka jam (blockade) of national and state highways for three hours on Saturday in protest against the three new central farm laws will not include Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand.
“There will be no roadblock inside Delhi as the city is already under roadblock,” farmer leader Darshan Pal of Sanyukt Kisan Morcha, the umbrella body of 40 farmer unions leading the protests, told ET. “All the national and state highways will be under chakka jam from 12 noon to 3 pm.”
The Samyukt Kisan Morcha, an umbrella body of the farmer unions protesting the three farm laws, on Friday said there would be no chakka jam in Delhi on February even as it asserted that peasants in other parts of the country will block national and state highways for three hours but in a peaceful way. In a statement, the SKM said emergency and essential services such as ambulance and school bus will not be stopped during the chakka jam that is proposed to be held between 12 pm and 3 pm on Saturday. There will be no chakka jam programme inside Delhi since all the protest sites are already in a chakka jam mode. All roads for entering into Delhi will remain open except where farmers protest sites are already located, the statement stated.
After the Republic Day violence, the Delhi Police has deployed additional measures, including tightening security and intensifying vigil at the city s border points, to deal with any situation emerging out of the proposed chakka jam on Saturday by farmers protesting the Centre s new farm laws, officials said.
Delhi Police Commissioner S N Shrivastava also held a meeting with senior officers of the force and reviewed the security arrangements on Friday. The police will also be monitoring content on the social media to keep a watch on those spreading rumours against the force, officials said. After the violence on January 26 that had left over 500 security personnel injured and one protestor dead, Shrivastava had accused the protesting farmer union leaders of betrayal and breaching the agreement as thousands of peasants deviated from their pre-decided routes for the tractor parade.
