I Will Not Let Police Be Subjected to Trial by Social Media: UK Home Secretary
Police officers should not face “trial by social media,” the Home Secretary has said as she backed calls to publish more body-worn video footage of incidents.
In a speech to the annual Police Federation of England and Wales conference, Priti Patel said “transparency is vital” and supported plans to tackle “misleading” video clips uploaded on to social media.”
She told the audience: “I will not let the police be subjected to trial by social media.
“That’s why I backed the federation’s call for forces to share body-worn video footage to counter highly selective, and misleading, video clips uploaded on to social media.

A ring of steel has been thrown around Cornwall for the G7 summit, with the Royal Navy watching for threats from the air, including drones, as 11,000 police officers and 150 sniffer dogs attempt to protect world leaders.
With the three-day G7 Leaders’ Summit in Carbis Bay starting on Friday, Devon and Cornwall Police have called in wide-ranging support from the MoD.

The widow of Pc Andrew Harper has said she is “not going to stop” with her campaign to get the law changed in his name, saying it is needed “now more than ever”.
Lissie Harper wants to see the introduction of Harper’s Law – a mandatory life sentence for those who kill emergency workers due to a criminal act.
Appearing on ITV’s Good Morning Britain (GMB), Mrs Harper said she hoped Home Secretary Priti Patel would “continue to show her support” for the campaign when she speaks at the Police Federation of England and Wales conference later on Wednesday.

The Home Secretary said she was determined to give the police all the support and equipment they needed to do their job effectively.
Speaking at the Police Federation of England and Wales annual conference, Ms Patel thanked officers for all the work they had done during the pandemic.
Asked if she had a message for officers now life was beginning to return to normal, she said she wanted to see them get back to doing the job they had signed up for and tackling dangerous criminals.
